I'm pretty skeptical of almost anything being an annealing error. Just seems too easy to confuse with environmental damage most of the time. That said, the linear "grain" pattern on this coin made me think juuuust maybe it could be a candidate. Curious what people here think.

My first thought was environmental staining/tarnishing, just like you suggested, but I also agree it could be an annealing error? Like yourself, we have seen a ton of coins past through here, and trust your gut, Sam, if perhaps it is something more than just environmental damage, then maybe it is. What's the other said look like? I would think an annealing error grain pattern to be present there too. While this isn't 100% certain, I would think there would be some sign of the error there as well.

Other side shows the same pattern/grain at the same angle as the obverse. Was having a tough time getting a good picture, but will update with one soon.

Seeing the obverse looks promising for thinking an annealing error, in my opinion!

Thanks! I'm still pretty skeptical about it, but it's the most curious example of surface discoloration I've found, so I will be interested to get to the bottom of it, whatever it is. So hard to find good information on annealing errors. It's about 100 images of environmental damage to every one of an actual error, and many of the reference sites have very limited examples of only one denomination (e.g. Error-Ref shows only nickels).

Just rolling line seen on the coin after the BU surfaces are gone. It was probably an outdoor find and some of the surfaces haven't been turned in the original color. Not a keeper, but a spender.

I agree with the above. Mix of roller lines and environmental damage
