Hi everybody, I bought a lot of coins that included a set of Large Cents. After watching John Wrights "The Ultimate Large Cent Date and Type Set" I decide to look at the coins in more detail. Since there where 4 1854 cents I wanted to what the difference was and the first thing I noticed was the dates were punched differently. I have been searching the web for pictures I could compare for the Newcomb or Sheldon variety but it's hard tell. Below are close-ups of the dates any help identifying them would be appreciated.

Based on the date position alone, you might check N-17 for coin #1, N-2 for coin #2, and N-16 for coin #4. There are several possibilities for #3, including N-8, N-22, and N-26. You really need to see the entire coin to properly attribute the variety.

gunbarrelcoins not sure if you are an EAC member but if so, you can log in to the website and download the latest (2020) edition of John R. Grellman, Jr.'s "The Die Varieties of US Large Cents 1840-1857" in PDF format, it was released maybe 2 months ago. I have it but haven't had time to go over each of your coins yet. He lists 30 varieties in 1854 now with one delisted variety (N-15 was unlisted). I also have the Noyes late date books, will have a go if time permits later. Might help if you could post full obverse and reverse photos for each coin as well, as some of the diagnostics are not just the date positions, (Grellman's book doesn't even show the dates in most of the artwork anyways only descriptions), his print version coming soon might have the photographs, as the free EAC member PDF copy only provides line artwork and no photographs.

That's great, unfortunately I can't log into the website, (can't remember my password and can't get a new one because I assume it is sending the new passwords to my old email address that has been dead for over 6 years) I've tried contacting the webmaster but I assume he is sending the responses to my old address as well.

Gunbarrelcoins, best place for pictures of the varieties (in my opinion) is the Dan Holmes collection in the Goldberg archives. Dan had the most complete set ever assembled. Early dates missing one variety (1793 NC-5, unique and in the ANS collection but pictured in the catalog), middle dates missing one variety (1825 N-5, unknown at the time of the sale but it has the obv of N-4 and the rev of N-10), late dates missing one variety (1851 N-42, unique and Dan couldn't get the owner to sell it to him.)

The catalogs have large, good, images of every variety, but unfortunately no diagnostic descriptions of the varieties. But they are great for comparicon images on the early and middle dates. Difference are so minor on the late dates that other than date positions you often still can't see the little diagnostic features.

Thanks Condor101!! Those links really help, the first link http://images.goldbergauctions.com/&sale=54#toc) has all the Large Cents. After staring and comparing all the 1854 photos I have come to the following conclusion that the coins are:

1: Newcomb-17
2: Newcomb-2
3: Newcomb-8
4: Newcomb-16

The Naftzger collection in the first link has all the late dates but not all of the varieties, although he does have a lot of them.
