I bought this coin thinking it might be an N-3 1851/81. Pics are not great. Sent the coin to Bob Grellman and it was indeed an N-3 die state B late. He gave it an EAC grade of VF-25. Do you think this coin would be graded xf-40 at a TPG?

Not a shot of EF-40 at a TPG. VF-30 IMO.

Agree, not EF, especially by EAC standards.

if EAC graded it XF 40 it would be AU something at a TPG. A vf-25 EAC grade is going to be higher than vf-30 IMHO.

I disagree on this particular coin. While the obverse carries the coin I still feel that this coin is a TPG VF-30, possibly a 35 on a Monday. But there is a 0% chance IMO this goes EF-40. If it does I will bonk whichever grader gives it that on the head because there is no way that anyone can justify that grade

if you look at PCGS photograde images it compares more favorably to the XF-40 images. In hand the coin looked better than these pics by the way.

Firstly, photograde sucks as you know, secondly I am a very conservative grader when it comes to circulated EAC, so that will play a part in my opinion. I'd argue that the PCGS EF-40 is overgraded.

the lighting stinks on this photos to get an accurate grade. I'm looking at a fairly rounded cheek area, hair separation around the ear and some detail in the lower curl but thats hard to see in these photos. the obverse looks VF35. the reverse has a couple spots of verdigris which should be abated and might come in around VF30. the overall softness of the coin and flat collars will hold it to VF30 imo. EAC might grade it VF25 as stated

more accurate grade can be achieved with better lighting on a darker background to avoid indirect color from the background reflecting onto the coin

This coin couldn't make EF in a TPG holder. This is a VF coin all day.

probably right about the vf grade but in my ebay for sale examples I was surprised at what those xf45 coins looked like. Here are a couple of other pics I tried to take.
