1984 Lincoln Memorial Cent / LMC . Need Some Explanations.

Bluefalco New Member 43 Posts	Posted 11/20/2020 4:03 pm Looking thru some 1984 LMC's and came across this oddity. First off the ear lobe caught my attention resembling WDDO-012. Perhaps? Then while checking the remainder of the obverse I came across these anomolies located in the upper left quadrant. Strange gouging @ the L in LIBERTY. Also @ IN above both letters as though they have been pushed down. Not possible right? Also above GOD strange gouging the same width of the devices. There also seems to be a depressed area paralleling the rim here. The 4 in the date looks a little spread but suspect PMD here. If the full obverse image were better you would also notice many raised areas in same area described above that almost appear to be devices and or designs from some other source. Best I could do with what is available. Your thoughts on this please. Report this Post to the Staff

Tanman2001 Pillar of the Community United States 4404 Posts	Posted 11/20/2020 6:28 pm The lettering near the edge looks to have Die Deterioration Doubling caused by a Ridge Ring from excessive die use. The doubling on the earlobe looks more like a contact mark, this coin has a lot of scrapes and that's just one of them. Report this Post to the Staff
Bluefalco New Member 43 Posts	Posted 11/20/2020 6:52 pm So Die Deterioration is what explains the devices appearance to have been pushed down from the rim. I know they have not, but appear that way. Is there examples that look similar? Nothing similar shows on the images provided. Thanks for the input. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 11/21/2020 8:16 pm The ear looks reduced by MD or coin contact. On a doubled die, the affected areas are raised, not lowered. Open these images and note that on each one of these doubled ears, the areas are raised. Click to enlarge the images. Incuse marks on a coin is 99% of the time, damage.
