If you're going to peddle this chicanery... at least have the sense to make sure another one won't be ending an hour after yours:

As an aside, are cobs frequently forged and what are things to look out for? I have been wanting to get one for some time now, but would never consider getting it on ebay. They are fairly often featured in the auctions where I live, but you still hear stories of fakes making it past the guys that check the lots for authenticity.

Cobs are tough. Buy from a trusted expert, not me. I was kind of interested in a general Mexico cob type set. My only "slabbed" cobs are a Mexico Luis 1/2 R and a klippe, which is not really a cob. Had a chance at a Luis 1 R but was not able to attribute it. There are experts in Spain.

"Buy from a trusted expert"

Or if you care enough (and have enough time to devote), learn to be your own expert.

Study known fakes vs. confirmed genuine material... know what traits to look for.

For example, these twins are part of a series that has emerged out of, seemingly, Spain the last few years... if you study them all together, their style becomes evident.

----

Off-topic, but re: Luis I... confirmed Mexico pieces are scarce. Luis monogram half R are much tougher than Potosi or Lima (I snagged one off ebay recently). Confirmed Mexico SHIELD Luis pieces are VERY hard - rarely does part of the name show in those mid-1720s years.

Probably a cast, tarnished in order to be passed as a real cob coin.

Buy from an expert, where authenticity is guaranteed and a return of a fake is not a problem, even after years.

Never buy a "no returns" cob coin.
