merclover - It looks like a grease-filled die. You probably won't be able to make out the last two digits. Try putting one drop of water over those digits and see if you can make them out while wet.

After reading here, I was apprehensive approaching my bank to buy my first box. I was thinking I would have to find two banks, a pick-up bank and a dump bank. I naively went into the bank nearest me where I have accounts, and apologetically asked the tell if it was possible to buy a box of pennies. She said of course I could! She couldn't have been friendlier! I felt I had to explain why, so I told her my son was interested in getting into coin collecting, and I thought this would keep him busy. I didn't have the guts to admit the box was for me! She said it was no problem at all. I asked if in the future I'd have to order them, she said no, they always had several on hand, she said the couple of restaurants and several businesses directly across the street from them were customers, so they always keep boxes available. I asked if it was OK if I simply returned the box I had just bought and swap it for another one, and she said that would work just fine! Fearing I'd wear out my welcome, I asked it was OK to swap boxes two or three times a week, and she said it wasn't a problem, and even gave me roll wrappers to roll them with (is this common?). This location doesn't have a coin machine.

Before I left, I asked if there were other people doing this (searching through rolls) and she said for pennies, no, but they had a few customers that bought up rolls of half dollars as well as any gold dollars that had. She said that "halves fly out of here!"

This first box I'm working on (Brinks) seems to have a good mixture of pennies, or perhaps I should say, an average mix compared to what I read here the rest of you find. I've opened about ten rolls so far... lots of zinc, of course... maybe a total of about a roll of copper, only three wheaties and a decent mix of 60s, 70s and 80s. Four or five BU log cabins, a handful of '10 and '11 shield pennies. Overall, I am surprised that even this much copper and 60s and 70s are left in circulation considering how long ago these coins travelled... it's mid 2011, and I am finding lots a nice coins that are 40 and 50 years old! And they way that several of you go through them, well, I am surprised to find any half way decent coins left at all! No WAM's yet, but I'm still searching!

Yay, silver!

yes, its was in a customer wrapped cent roll. I find a lot of dirty dimes in CWR where the person wrapping the roll isn't paying attention. This is the first silver dime I have found. Kinda funny really...

Jayman and rdlem, thanks... I think I can see the 4 now. I really want to see the '09 that Tamshowoff saw, but that's just wishful thinking!

Still working away on my first box... found a '42 King George Canadian penny, now I want to sort through Canadian pennies too!

The other day, I found a 1975-S cent in a bank roll. It's probably in AU condx. Some kid really needed a slurpee badly, and remembered his dad's coin collection? BTW, I am finding that LMC "S" mint marks are more rare than wheat cents in the bank rolls that I search. Of my brass LMC cent rolls, (hundreds), I have saved all S's, and they only make up 0.7% total.
