Jim - were those in customer rolls or bank boxes? I'm still tallying up what I pulled from the 6 cust rolled boxes. I ended up with 11 rolls of 78-82 coppers and 8 partial rolls from 64-76. Some rolls were 50% BU copper. In 4 of the boxes, the oldest I found was 1984. My speculation is that these were all rolled and stored (the edges of the BU cents are brown but the surfaces are brilliant) for 25-30 years, then recently turned in. BTW - I've tried the beer thing. I end up seeing too many doubled dies!  Matt |

Matt, these were in bank rolls. I get them from PNC and they do not roll coins. They use one of the services, I think Brinks. I will check.
You are right about the beer. I have found a dozen 1955 DDOs, all after the 6th beer. Joking, don't drink much.

It really doesn't count as roll searching, but my wife works at a country/hardware store and always does a quick skim through pennies before dumping them in the drawer. Yesterday out of two customer rolls she brought me 99 Wheats and 1 Foreign penny. The oldest was a WELL worn 1909!

I just found a badly worn 1909 roll searching. It is in such bad shape I could not even tell if there was a mintmark or a VDB. Still, I will take a 100 year old coin at face value any day!

So I got bored and bought (from the bank) 3 boxes of pennies. I wasn't doing anything more than looking for Wheaties to fill a few holes I have. found an average of 6-7 per box so I was happy, but I found a couple I had a question about. (i didn't embed them cause they are huge photos) Maybe a double die on the right of the 8 and 9. I may have pulled a first I got a box of pennies that had less than 3% copper and worse yet the 3% copper was what I consider "dirty copper". My son kept saying someone already gone through this box. It was painful to finish this box as it was someone's dump. Peace |

Ceylon - look a couple of pages back - I've also had the "luck" of a nearly no copper box. I had ONE copper coin in a box once - a wheat. LOL. I've also had a couple that were about 1 per roll, backed up by the next box being over 50% copper. Its totally luck of the draw these days.

this question may have already been answered, but how and how many at a time do you guys usually dump the pennies.
im finding it tasking rolling them all up. I was going to bank of america for their coin bags, but now there is a $6 charge on the bags. there are no free coin stars in the area and normal coinstars charge 8-10%.
half way through my boxes I start to worry about how I'm going to get rid of all the pennies...

Ceylon - I was given someone else's dump box on a Friday afternoon. With nothing else to do for the weekend I searched it for errors and varieties and found this (posted a few pages back):  This baby is #5 on the traildies.com all time top 50. It makes me wonder what good stuff I might have missed. Matt |

SDcoinguy - My credit union has no charge for their coin counters, so I usually use that. But I also have another bank where I buy boxes, search, reroll and exchange the searched box for a new box. The vault manager just keeps an extra box around in her weekly rotation knowing that I will grab it and return it for her to get to her retail customers. I usually just do that with nickels, but she also offered it to me for cents.

A $6 charge on the bags?  I hope they don't start that here.  SDcoinguy, I've used about 4 different BofA's here, and none have even mentioned a charge for the bags. My only other suggestion would be to check with some of the Credit Unions you may have nearby. I've heard that a lot of them have coinstar machines inside the lobby that is free for account holders. There's also a local Union Bank here that has the same. hope this helps, Scott |
