Hi Mike. Here are some more shots of the ear, neck area, and left wing. I am not sure if that's a doubling on the ear. I hope this helps. Thanks junjie

I don't believe I see the ear doubling or wing gouge which have been noted previously; this leaves us no clearer as to which particular variety this coin is. That's the fun, and the frustration, of VAMming. The reverse you requested is below, Mike. I bought and sold that coin before I was really aware of VAM's; the pictures are among my earliest efforts at coin photography. It's nicely clashed but not one of the "significant" clashes for that date. Wish I still had that one anyways.

DAVE, When I saw this post I checked out some of my undiagnosed 1887's and while searching through them I found 2-VAM1F'S, I WAS AMAZED. STILL, I DO NOT KNOW THIS COINS VAM# yet, MIKE

junjie, I've gone through my book, supplements and Vamworld. Checked every VAM and can't see anything to suggest your coin is not a VAM 1. Still a good start and a great show of friendship on beginning your Morgan collection.

junjie, two reasons yours can't be a Vam5. 1. Vam5 has very noticeable doubling on the 2nd 8 and 7. Your pictures of the date are good enough to show this, it's just not there. 2. Vam5 date starts at the left edge of 3rd denticle from neck point, where yours is starting half way through the 3rd denticle. These markers must be exact to be considered Vam5.

I know there is an explanation for this.I have looked and can honestly state that there must be something we are all missing. Is there a die gouge on the left wing, 3-feathers up from the bottom through the feather?.Also did you check out VAM 1F, THIS WOULD HELP.Otherwise, with out the coin in hand, BE WELL, MIKE ps;MRM, this could be a normal or VAM 1 coin with the clashes and dbl'ng? DAVE: thanks for posting the reverse of the coin, I do not see the die gouge on the wing, did you mean when you said you wish you still had that one, did you mean the LT wing gouged VAM 1F?

Yes Mike, a Vam1 can have clashes. As long as no clashed letters are tranferred they mean nothing. I see typical die wear on the letters and stars, nothing to suggest hub doubling.

Hi Mike, is that a die gouge on the third wing, two round objects (center of the picture} connected by a thick line? Thanks junjie

Hi I failed to include this on my last post. Is it a die crack or mint grease or what on the 8 next to 1? Thanks
