I found this Shield nickel Cud listed on ebay and looked on cudsoncoins to cross reference the Cud to find a date, but I can't find a similar looking Cud on any of the Shield nickels listed, could this potentially be an undiscovered Cud? I figured it would be unlikely due to the size of the Cud, but maybe not.

It's a nice Cud. I would want the coin with the date. If it was my coin I would send pictures to cuds-on-coins and see what they say. Mike Diamond would know.

Shouldn't a Cud that large show more of a weakness on the opposite side?

I can kind of see the effect on the opposite side...where the date would be...kind of...?
I would have to see this in hand to view the Cud area. Seems awfully lg and inspect to see if it was manipulated to give the appearance of a Cud.
Look fwd to what others have to say.

Certainly looks like a Cud, but I agree that normally this would cause STATES to be lightly struck.

No The Cud is at the top of the obv, the the weak area would be at the bottom of the rev where CENTS is.

Right, but I was wondering why CENTS isn't more weak based on how bold the Cud is.

Wow! It may be in the Cud Book, which I have a copy, only it's in storage - and I'm not sure what box it's in. So I can't help by looking it up. There are some really large Cuds on Shield nickels in that book. This one is a doozy! Also just because it's not listed at cuds-on-coins or in any of the big books certainly doesn't mean it's not known, there are a lot of lesser known Cud errors around. This one is sure a major one though. Very impressive.
