A while ago I posted a 1914 with a glued on D, and recently a couple 1944-D coins altered to look like 1914-D. This is another, and less common type of altered date 1914-D, the "carved D".

In general these look pretty bad, but even a good one can be spotted by noting the shallow depression around the mint mark where the copper was scraped to develop the D.

Interesting. I've never seen this kind of counterfeit. I've seen boatloads of the altered 1944 Ds and some glued on D's but never a carved impression. Thanks for sharing!

Well, you have to admire the creativity and artistic effort, while lamenting the moral deficiency.

Interesting that enough copper could be chased to build up that mintmark. Thx for posting!

Huh, I too have never seen one done this way. Sadly, even as obvious as it is, would probably be another one of those sold for wayyy too much on ebay and the like. Thanks for posting.
