Coin does not appear to have some of the known markers for an authentic 93s. Great photos though.

numismatic student:
Are you referring to the rabbit ears in the R of Liberty and the die scratch in the T of Liberty (both of which appear to be missing on this coin)? Are there other markers that you don't see that should be there?
Incidentally, the coin is up for auction at a reputable auction house. The listing indicates a value of $12,000, so it is definitely claiming that it is real. The coin doesn't look quite right to me though.

Yes, there was only one obverse die for this coin with those specific markers. This one does not show those nor the die scratch in the lower portion of the hair. This one is fake and I wonder why a reputable auctioneer would not slab/authenticate a coin of this value with so many known fakes in the wind.

Agreed. I guess they maybe aren't as reputable as I thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

Honestly, from these images I cannot say it's definitely a counterfeit or altered specimen. The date position matches the obverse die and the mint mark position matches the VAM-2 reverse die. If I were in the market to pursue this one I would request a close up of image of LIBERTY at the very least.

It sold last night for $6500. For the buyer's sake, I really hope the pictures were just misleading.

I am with Dave700 on this one. The coin has the raised 3, correct mint mark location, and correct date position. From these photos the die marking of the rabbit ears, slash on T and die scratches on the lower hair may not be visible. I would like to see better photos of the die markings before calling it a counterfeit.

Is it me, or does this show an old cleaning?

I suppose the buyer got a "steal" for this 1893-S paying "only" $6,500.

1st question I would have for the auction company is "why is this coin not slabbed?"
