Hi all,

I just bought a complete set of silver proofs for all the 50 State Quarters ('99 - '08).

I'm troubled by what arrived in the mail. Some of the cases have cracks in them. Also, the cases are "backwards" on some of them, i.e. the side that opens is not consistently the same (US flag side vs maroon background side)

And then most troubling -- the quarters in the '99 set are backwards too..! As in all of the "tails" side of the quarters are facing on the maroon side of the case. Every other set has them on the flag side.

I don't think I am looking into this too much, but is there any chance that I am being overly cautious or should I assume that these have all been tampered with? (Which the seller denies, claiming to have bought a set every year and stashed in the closet)

I will say that I did the tissue test thanks to this awesome forum, using the nickel as a baseline and they passed without exception, showing through very white, which at least has put me at ease that these all haven't been swapped out for clad or something like that.

If they look otherwise unhandled is any of this a big deal? I get that these aren't high dollar coins or anything, but I would still like to have what I thought I was buying.

Thanks to all!

I would expect that these are all real silver proofs - however, I do know that some will buy multiple sets, sometimes many multiple sets, looking to get high grade coins that they can either put into their collection or have graded and then resell, while selling off the rest. So maybe someone bought these sets, swapped out some of the coins and then reassembled and sold them? The inconsistency of the way the cases are facing seems to imply that they have at least been opened at some point although that may not be that big of a deal.

oddguy, no reason to be sorry for your opinion. I received a partial refund for the set, and overall I think the price is fair for what it is.

thanks KenKat. if someone is looking for the highest of the highest and these are the rest, I am OK with having an "average" proof set from the mint. Is there something I should check for, e.g. damage through handling?

Is there a good way to safely remove the '99 coins and put them back in their proper orientation?

Thank you!

You could see if you can pry open the case using something like a flat bladed screwdriver and then flip the coins using cloth gloves or handling by the edges to re-orient the coins. If the coins look okay, I'd assume they are ok absent any obvious scratches, etc.
