Whether you believe in it or not, this variety has always been kind of interesting.

Some would say it has a couple of die gouges under the 1 and 9 of the date. Others swear it has a fully displaced "S" mint mark there. I really don't know which is true, but I pull them when I find them as people do collect them. Just found this one in a BU roll.

I added a photo with a rough sketch of the supposed "S" to help visualize it.

Amazing, I lean towards a mint mark, but who knows?

I'd imagine unless these are in AU or better they would be near impossible to spot...
Great find!

Almost seems too coincidental that the S MM is so out of place and was never actually used that year.

Much like the 1952-D RPM-15/1MM-15 with what looks to be a die chip at the rim ...But it still counts!

Nice BU example.

I would say that I too am skeptical, but having seen a fair number of these in different die states, some of them really do look like an S.

To me, that S is too big. I wonder if it can't somehow be the inner part of the D mint mark. It seems to be a good match
EDIT to add:
I created this GIF to demonstrate
