Nearing the end of 2020, a year most of us probably want to forget! Thought it would be interesting to hear what collection goals there are amongst the members here for the coming year?....Also to maybe pick up some ideas from fellow collectors concerning 'themes' for example coins from rebellions would be interesting?...
Post your ideas, dreams, thoughts on what you would like to try and achieve in 2021...
For me these are my targets for 2021...
Started a 12 Olympian God/ess set in Bronze this year. Goal 1...To complete it hopefully!...Only 3 left...Hephaistos (Vulcan), Demeter and Ares...Would like to actually display these in a vertical case when complete...
I managed to complete the 5 Good Emperors set this year in silver including their wives (Obviously Plotina in Bronze).. Goal 2.....Would like to increase the set to 8 and add Denarii of Lucius verus, Crispina and Aelius to it. I've been pipped at the post on numerous occasions this year!...I already have a Lucilla and Commodus waiting in the wings to compliment. Will also look to upgrade the Sabina but it isn't at the top of the list as I've actually grown quite fond of this worn example..
Goal 3...Pick up a Pescennius Niger Denarius some how!
Managed to acquire a nice Marcus Aurelius Sestertius this year to go with my Antoninus Pius. Goal 4..Would like to purchase Nerva, Hadrian and Trajan in the same denomination to complete the 5 good Emperors in a big Bronze set. But obviously these can get expensive.
Goal 5...Keep on picking up coins for my Kashmir Hindu/Sultinate collection...Not much out there at the moment and only managed 3 upgrades this year!. But always on the look out!

You beat me to it! I was going to start a 2021 thread. My 2021 goals are actually simple. 1) I want to do a slabbed 7070 (no gold collection) 2) complete the slabbed IHC collection Compared to prior years this is a small goal but it won't be cheap. Thanks for creating this thread.

I'd like to fill more holes or complete my Dansco Japan album.

I'll be selling off coins to generate some funds for the newer collecting focuses. I'll continue picking up ancient bronze weaponry including, I really hope, a reasonably affordable dagger with a penannular (crescent-shaped) guard at the junction between hilt and blade. It's a type that was prevalent in ancient Iran (more specifically, in Luristan and its environs), but such daggers are very pricey when they appear on the market. (And there are a number of fakes to be avoided) I've been wanting a legit specimen, with good provenance - and that I can afford - for a long time. No luck thus far. Maybe 2021 will be my year.
I would like to pick up one or more Vologases III tetradrachms, and at least several interesting coins from Elymais. And, of course, much more pottery. I'm already eyeing my next round of pottery purchases from a seller I trust.
And, yes, Paul: A huge goal this year, after March, is to finally, finally, get a long-delayed display case or two set up. I am having to wait for the completion of a big window replacement job here at home.

Just to clarify, is the OP referring specifically to goals concerning Ancient, Greek, Roman, and Medieval Coins, or is this open to all collectors (like the current 2020 Goals thread)?

I would say my goals for 2021 and beyond is the get back into collecting again and to get back up to speed with my studies on ancient coins.

As before, my main goal is to complete photographing and cataloguing my coin collection. I doubt if it will happen in my lifetime though. The second goal is to find more of those unusual coins. The ones I can drive myself crazy with, while trying to find out more about them.

Sell many duplicates. Photograph keepers. Hopefully acquire a nice $3.00 gold Indian princess.
I just looked back at past years and I really never meet my goals so I made it simple this year.

I only have two holes left in my 82s set. I need something of the dates 318bc and 482 AD. I know there are some Greek-ish pieces dates 319/8 and 318/7, so that might be my next hole to fill. I'm starting to accept that a 482 AD may not exist, so may just have to settle on an Zeno and Penoz of this period. A big recent thanks to a collector for selling me a very rare 382 AD piece :) After this I'll be focus on some US sets, namely buffalos and draped bust Half Cents. I have capped bust Half Dimes and dimes to work on too.

Collection goals for 2021? - the same as it has been for nearly 50 years. That is OFE(C)*.
One From Every (Culture/Century)*, covering the whole of numismatics over the last 26 centuries, to do that with at least one representative in all three coinage metals, but in a lot of cases, in a range of denominations also. That is why I am dependent on whatever expertise the CCF can provide to help me. The specialists know a lot more than what my generalist knowledge can ever provide.
Such a collection can only be representative and never be complete, but it does well in describing the development of numismatics since it's beginnings. The original inspiration came when I was a child, from looking at pictures of ancient coins in the Encyclopedia Britannica.

I am horribly undisciplined in that I set goals but then permit wanton "scope creep."
That said, starting with the coins most appropriate to this subforum ... 1. I would like to get a Byzantine coin with St. Theodore for my saints theme. I have identified three Sear types and have them on a Numisbids want list 2. I would like to get Brabant coins from the reigns of Jean IV (1415-27) and Philippe de St. Pol (1427-1430) for my Brabant OFER collection. 3.I have a small number of 17th century dates to fill for my "qualified OFEY," mostly between 1639 and 1659. Filling the missing 1650s dates with Polish coins will be expensive and could take some years 4. I want to continue to learn so I can be a better contributor here.

I thought I did post it in the Ancients Forum? Not really a problem though I'm not from the States or collect modern coins so didn't even know what the initials IHC stood for until I clicked on the link .... @BobL....Looking forward to seeing your new acquisitions in the coming year Bob, all balanced on bespoke holders with highly descriptive id labels in dust proof Glass display cabinets ...Seriously though you do have a wonderful collection Bob it must be quite a special feeling to hold these pieces of history in your hand! Good luck in the new year.. @echizento...Hope everything settles down for you in the New Year Ron and you can get back into your collecting themes. @Novicius...Watch out Jim that wall looks hard!..Hope you get to catalogue as many as possible and look forward to seeing your Greek brainteasers in the coming year....You certainly had a few this year but pretty much id'd them all, 'good going'!. I've thoroughly enjoyed your write ups and learnt a great deal as you've shown coins I'd never seen before..Keep em coming and 'happy hunting'. @sel_69l....That's a big goal!...Must be really interesting though without having too many constraints to pick out coins from an era that appeals to you at that particular time. Good luck on filling in some of the holes, however big, in the coming year.. @tdziemia....I do 'wander off' as well, but I think that's part of the fun, learning something new..Staying focused is 'sooo difficult', at least for me, when there are so many interesting coins with their related histories out there!..Good luck on staying focused and filling some of those spaces.

@ Palouche: My collection will never be complete. Neither will be the collection in the British Museum! Always lots of opportunities for numismatic and price research, before deciding to buy. All the best for Christmas and 2021.

Quote: Watch out Jim that wall looks hard!..Hope you get to catalogue as many as possible and look forward to seeing your Greek brainteasers in the coming year. Yes, the wall can be very hard Paul. I can't say I'd be tearing my hair out, as there isn't much left of that these days. Quote: I do 'wander off' as well, but I think that's part of the fun, learning something new. I do like threads like this, as it is an opportunity to see what others have an interest in. Often there are areas that I hadn't even thought of. It is easy to think of coin collecting as simply acquiring coins, cataloguing them, and putting them in storage boxes, but there is so much more to it than that. There are more facets to this hobby than a Rhombicosidodecahedron. I don't know if I'll ever settle on one area of the hobby, as I get sidetracked too easily, go off at a tangent, and find myself down yet another rabbit hole!
