I already have this coin posted in a Facebook group, although I am seeking another opinion despite how trustworthy the people in the Facebook group are :)

I have been given answers already to its oddly smooth appearance such as 'Beach coin' and ' Dryer Coin'. although I'm still curious as to whether or not it's one of those oil strike coins.

The front and back still have quite a bit of detail and are still somewhat shiny, but slippery. The rim which is supposed to have 'grooves' in it is completely smooth and is probably the shiniest part of the coin. I put the coin side-by-side with a 2005 as the coin's design is that bad that I can't get a good photo of it with every one making it look as though it's blurry.

I am just after some thoughts and answers. Like my other coins in my collection, I am not looking to sell. It'll be put into a 2x2 and then used as a reference for when/if I noodle one like it again :) So, basically it'll be used for research purposes :)

Obverse:
1998-5-Cents-Oil-Strike,-Or-Something-Else?

Reverse:

Note: Sorry for the poor quality. I could NOT get a decent picture of this coin to save myself.

Rim:

Comparison beside a 2005 5 cents:

Thankyou 'That Coin dude'and keith12 for taking the time to respond to my post and for providing me with the answers that I seek :)

I won't be putting this coin back into circulation though despite it being a Dryer Coin, but will be placing it in a 2x2 for the next time I come across one :)

Cheers,
-Nick

The absence of reeding and the thickened rim both point to a coin that has spent time in a clothes dryer.

Just a tip, you have named the 'sides' the wrong way round.

The 'Queen' side is obverse, platypus is reverse.

All Aussie and NZ and heaps of other countries have the same orientation.
