Just curious-thinking about bidding on this gold mohur. It grades NGC AU 55, but I'm looking at the pictures on the NGC website and to my eye it looks like it's been cleaned, but is not graded as such. Any thoughts? https://www.NGCcoin.com/certlookup/6066526-006/55/

I would pay bullion value for a cleaned mohur!

So why do you think it has been cleaned?

I can see AU-55 but I don't see cleaned.

I never trust NGC's cert photos for an accurate representation of surfaces. I'd say a majority of the coins I've submitted in the AU-Low MS range look like this. They come off as shiny, cleaned, or polished with minimal luster. Just my experience with them.

The fine vertical lines and washed out tired look. If you have ever handled a nice one of these You would never buy this piece . Back in the 1980s , nice ones were generally available in the London Market . Most offered today are generally of mediocre quality .

Save your money. Get a gold-filled commemorative mohur for $30 on ebay! Quote: Back in the 1980s , nice ones were generally available in the London Market @pacificoin, that sounds great, but what can we expect to get in the here and now? I see ebay sales of au-unc details for $4000 US

Great, thanks everyone for the input! I was mainly worried about the hairlines-they look like cleaning to me rather than circulation/bag marks, but I'm not an expert by any means. I guess I need to look beyond ebay for this kind of item. In fact, there's a few on Heritage Auctions that look better.

Quote: I never trust NGC's cert photos for an accurate representation of surfaces. True, the NGC certification photos are usually meant to showcase the slab and label, not the coin in the slab.
