Ok I know Philadelphia did not make 5 cent pieces in 68, 69, 70. Also did not put the mint mark on til I think 1981. Also I know they ordered no mint mark for all coins at that time to discourage collectors because of the coin shortage. Now in 1971 Philadelphia started making nickels but with no mint mark and put the P mint on nickels in 81. My question is..... What year did the no mint mark end, would a 1970 nickel with no mint mark be a D coin, and would a 1981 nickel with no mint mark be a error?Sorry if this is the wrong topic. I cant find general question forum. Thank you for your time.

In 1965, 66 and 67 there were no mm on any Nickels.
1979 was the last year Philadelphia had no mm.
A 1970 would have either a D or an S mm.
A 1981 Nickel should have a P or D mm or an S mm if it was a proof.
If the 1981 has no mm, then it is possible that it is a partial Grease Filled Die but would need a picture to confirm.

Looking at this list can tell you what Jefferson nickels had mint marks. 1980 appears to be the first year other than War Nickels to have a "P" mint mark. All nickels after 1979 have a mintmark.
