Is it possible to visually identify a copper coin from zinc coin from a submitted image. If so,school me. One of the more informed in the inner sanctum revealed that they had a 82 large date zinc from the photo. I am anxious to learn that technique especially when I am am not holding it at least.

@bluefalcon, that is an interesting question. I'm sure that someone more knowledgeable than I will weigh in with a visible difference, but for me I would use the weight as the determinant of copper vs. copper-plated zinc.

How many posts do I need before my queries matter?

A zinc cent (2.5g) will show plate splitting, plate flow and on circulated cent where the copper has worn off will be black/grey in color, most often this can be seen on the reverse columns/vases which are on each side at the bottom of the stairs. Also pending on the quality of the platting somethings the surface will look bumpy...hope that helps
And if you search enough cents...some/I can tell the difference between a 2.5 and a 3.1 in hand about 8 out of 10.

The answer to your question is theoretically NO. The weight is the only firm answer.

If I see zinc rot on a coin, or see grey poking out under split plating, it's easy to tell the coin is the lighter zinc. If you look at a fair number of cents, being able to tell becomes second nature, but as already mentioned, the only sure way to tell is weight.

with everyone. Thank you John1 for that post. I looked at past post of Bluefalco. OMGoodness. I didn't see anything to warrant what Bluefalco complained about. Everyone gave (their) opinions. And (No) hundreds didn't respond because enough was said for all questions asked. IF Bluefalco post another coin. I want to tell him or her what they want to here. You have a perfect example send it in and get it graded better yet send 10 or more coins at the same time. Then you can be grumpy at that company's answer. Nuff said.

Yes, there is a visual difference between the copper plated zinc planchet and the 95% copper alloy cent. it's possible for people that have seen lots and lots of them to identify the composition from a photo with a very high accuracy rate, it's not foolproof though.
People can make an educated guess from a picture and be right most of the time, near all the time even, the copper plated zinc planchets have some condition "tells" vs. the copper alloy cents.
But the 100% accurate way is to weight it. The 95% copper planchet weighs 3.11g and the 97.5% zinc, copper plated planchet weighs 2.5g.

Thanks John1. I know and wouldn't do that. I'm glad to be able to be here on CCF. For honest and fair answers. I do understand that people want the answer they want to here. But sometimes that answer isn't it. Lol it's happened to me but it turns out they were right. Hopefully people will read between the lines of what I said and set back and learn from people's opinions. Take care everyone. Thanks to everyone for helping with this (hobby)
