I picked this one up at the Houston Money Show last weekend. This is my first large cent to be added to my collection. As I am not familiar with this series I was hoping someone could help me with thoughts on the grade.

I know there is some corrosive pitting on the obverse, but I'm not sure if that necessarily takes anything away from the grade, or not.

Thanks in advance!

If I was a grader at ANACS I'd call it EF Details - Corroded.

I'm not all too familiar with this series, so take my comments with a grain o'salt.
It looks like a metal detecting find, originally buried in EF40, then encrusted with verdigris.
Verdigris was removed (leaving pits), and hair possibly retooled?
What baffles me slightly are the recent marks at 4:30, as if held by pliers.

You're right Kurt, those marks are odd. It certainly wasn't ME that held it with pliers!

I've heard of people "cleaning" corrosion from coin with electrolysis, I guess those marks could be from the alligator clip.

So basically I got hosed? I paid what amounts to VG pricing for it because I was attracted mostly to the detail. That rim ding escaped me until after the fact. But I guess if I likes it, that's what counts, right?

No. That seems like a fair price. Good find!

If you have any trouble selling it later at your purchase price, there's a government I know of that would be GLAD to provide a bailout!

No doubt...I'm sure they would extend me "credit" for that amount and then simply look the other way when I fail to make payments.
