Hi all,

Been few years havent post anything, but lost all day in trying figure out this. Purchased in auction as spanish cob coin 17 century. But could not locate anything similar. I think its more like Byzantine Trachy coin.

Would appreciate any help

@vkz, is it nominally flat or cup-shaped? I agree that in the second pic, the figure looks nimbate.

Hi Spence,

Thanks for replay, it is cup-shape

something like this : https://picclick.co.uk/LANZ-BYZANTI...&gid=1&pid=1

The picture hammered in center of coin and sides are very empty.

Ok yes definitely could be a billon Trachy then. I'm going to move this thread over to the medieval and ancient section of CCF so that we can get some specific eyes on this.

Well, this certainly shows that we should not take the word of an auction house to identify coins.
