Got this cull draped bust from a $12 coin lot off ebay just to have and at first glance I thought it was an 1803, so I wrote that on the 2x2 and forgot about it. I dug it out later just to study it some more and I decided to give it a careful cleaning to see if I can try and get a date off of it. Since it was already beat to hell, corroded and worn I decided to go ahead with it and I got a result that turned out way better than expected. I revealed not only partially but the entire date shown to my eyes and it was a 1798!! Which would be the oldest US coin I own and the joys of holding something that was around when Thomas Jefferson was alive is no other! I forgot to take a picture of the reverse but may upload it later. Now to tell what hair variety she has? Good luck to me for that. The date reveal is enough for me to be happy!!

Nice find! I'd love finding something affordable from the 1700s.

Thank you guys!! I gave the seller positive feedback and told the story about it and now the same seller decided to jack up the prices of the rest of the culls to $17.98 ea. Whoops XD at least he set the price to honor the date reveals date!

Here's some better pictures under daylight. What confuses me is parts of the coin are worn unevenly yet other parts such as the wreath and one cent appear to be quite decent like in VG or F. The leaves appear separated and not worn down and merged together which is weird because the obverse the hair is obliterated yet the LIB in Liberty looks sharper. It could be just copper oxide or hardened dirt that wore down smooth over the metal beneath.

Or lightly struck in those areas to begin with?
