Hi folks- A newbie here with a puzzling (to me) Indian cent. First off- yes it is a dug coin and dirty. I am hoping someone can tell me from my poor pics what is wrong with the last 8 here. I know it's not the 8/7 overstrike, but I don't know enough to be able to diagnose a die break or other errors. I really appreciate any input. to the community! Looking at your pics, I would agree it's neither the rare 1888/7 Snow-1 nor the (disputed) 1888/7 Snow-7. Oh well. I've taken one pic of the date and tried to resolve more detail (below). Given the corrosion, it's very hard to tell what's going on. I do see the whole outline of the 8 (arrows). The "stroke" through the 8 could be some kind of damage, or due to the coin corroding against another coin? I know some about IHC varieties, and it doesn't match a digit shape. But--Rick Snow might give some better advice here...he'll look at your coin for $4 and tell you what it is. (I'm not advertising for the guy, but it's a good service--check out Eagle Eye Rare Coins online.

Thanks Kurt. I registered at the Fly-in forum a couple days ago to post it there but got no confirmation. I'll try contacting him directly.

Yes--I would suggest just sending it to him for a conclusive opinion. The Fly-In forum is rather quiet, and usually the high-end stuff gets the attention. (imo)

Hey Kurt, does he attribute worn coins like this? I've tried to register on the site as well, but I have a feeling you have to be a member already before they'll admit you. Both attempts I've made have been completely ignored.. even emails to the admin about errors received trying to register.

Quote: Both attempts I've made have been completely ignored... Yeah...it seems to "get in", somebody on the inside has to sponsor you to be a paid member. I don't know what that involves, but I could give it a try. However, I rarely contribute there because the place is so darn quiet...and they wonder why. Funny. So if you ask me, it's better to just get Snow's guides and hang out here...you'll have way more fun! Quote:Or some other foreign object in the ground . Nail? Makes more sense to me.

I, too walked that path, and with the same results. I don't get enough OJHC's to make an investment in membership, but I would go along with the guides. Dick

Although you'll have to put up with me bugging you half to death about Snow #'s once I'm able to dive into the guides. I got them while I was in town.. now that I'm home I realize I don't have a whole lot of IHC's that have enough detail to attribute. But I'm going to give it a shot on the ones that do. So stay tuned... I recently acquired a '66!

Nice, I don't have one of those--have fun looking up your coins! Some of the RPDs are quite easy to see, despite some wear.

Rick did answer my email a couple days later. I attached these pics in case he wanted to tell me not to waste our time. And that's what he did. Says he can't attribute a corroded coin and don't bother sending it in. I expected as much. I guess I can clean it now to try and bring out some more detail.

Oh well...makes sense I guess, because corrosion can add details as well as remove them.

It seems you have joined the worn variety cent club with many others "Hi my name is Jim and I have a worn IHC, an 1888/7 Snow-2.....I Think "! But wouldn't give it up for anything. Jim

From appearances I agree that this is an 1888 cent. I also agree that the problem with the last digit of the date was caused by damage, apparently before the coin corroded to the point that the details of the problem are not obvious. Unfortunately due to the corrosion the coin has little chance of giving up exactly what caused the problem. My vote is damage, though.
