Hey so I broke out my scale and just went through pocket change to just randomly weigh some coins see if any were off and I found a 1982 Lincoln weighed out to 2.4 as shown in photo provided w/ this posting & another 1982 but it weighed out to 3.1grams ....?
Plus the one seems bigger like it's physical size dimension its more solid off that makes sense ? Like more dense or durable idk so help me out I'm curious to know your thoughts and u can blatantly see the size in the text font on ea. Lincoln one is smaller the other is bigger font size text

In 1982 they changed the coin composition, and had both the old and the new weights made that year, one that weighs 2.4 g is copper plated zinc, and the 3.1 g one is solid bronze.

Your "2.4g" cent is a small date Philly and the 3.1 is the large date Philly style.

In 1982 they produced two types of metals (switching from one to the other mid stream), and also they had two different date sizes, known as a "large date" and a "small date" Here is a visual guide to assist you:

Quote:
the 3.1 g one is solid bronze.

Actually Bronze is an alloy of copper with about 12% Tin. Lincoln memorials are an alloy of 95% copper and 5% zinc/tin untill the mint switched over to the copper plated zinc in 82 as stated.

I don't mean to split hairs, but you both are wrong. "Bronze" coins were made from an alloy of copper (.950%), tin and zinc (.50%), found in Lincoln cents from 1947 to 1962. From 1962 to 1982, cents were made of copper (.950%) and zinc (.50%) and NO tin (known only as a "copper alloy" but not "Bronze"). So, officially, cents made in 1982 are not "solid bronze" (since they were made without tin) and, as mentioned, sans tin*.

So is the small date of any value or the large date ? I'm confused on exactly which Lincoln to look out for in 1982 and 1983
