Northern-Co-Operative-Company-Aberdeen-8-Pence-Anybody-Know-More?

(uniface, thin tin or zinc)

This weighs 1.44 grams and has a diameter of about 25 millimeters.

The inscription reads:

Northern Co-operative Company Aberdeen
8 pence

JH&S Birm (perhaps the token maker)

there is no mystery as to what this is:

An 8 pence token of the Northern Co=operative Company.

I can find plenty of information about the organization, but nothing on the tokens, not a single image. Now from this time forwards, at least this thread an image will show it in Google!

I am most interested in information on the rarity. The absence of Google information suggests that it is uncommon and/or unpopular.

Hmm... Clearly the same style and period. I wonder why Google did not catch this for me?

These tokens were used to keep a tally of purchases made by members of a particular co-op. If you spent (for example) 1/8 (one shilling and 8 pence) your were given 1 shilling and 8 pence worth of tokens. These you kept till "divi day" when you cashed them in for your dividend. During the year you were expected to exchange your accumulation of lower value tokens for higher value ones. Most co-ops that used tokens only had the standard British denominations: ½d, 1d, 3d, 6d, 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/- 10/- and £1. The Northern Co-op Company Ltd was unusual in that it had a full set of every penny and shilling value which, while making the issue of tokens easy for the staff, must have been a nightmare to add up. Here are three examples.

J H & S BIRM is indeed the maker: James Hinks & Son, Birmingham.

@tokenscot, thanks. This is yet another example of where the collective knowledge of the CCF exceeds that of Google.

This was an interesting system, although rather labour intensive by modern standards.

So obviously these would have been made in some numbers.

and, just for the sake of curiosity, do you have any idea what was a typical dividend as a % of purchases? I wonder how it compares to bonuses paid now.

There is a company in Canada, Canadian Tire, that used to give coupons of up to 3% for cash payments. Nowadays you get it for using the company credit card.
