I don't own this coin, but I am thinking ahead to when I can eventually fill the Flowing Hair Half Cent void in my type collection (I have the other three Half Cents!). I want a decent VF example, and the 1794 one seems to be the most attractive in terms of relief on the design. This one seems priced way too high for what it is, and the surface doesn't look so great to me, but I am curious what you think of the grade and of the surfaces for a Flowing Hair Half Cent. Do you think it deserves a straight grade?

The reverse looks like its tilting to a Details grade to me. I have been looking at a fair number of those of late. But I am no grading expert and certainly not an expert on coppers. Overall, a nice example if you could get it at a reasonable price.

I could see this as a straight grade VF-30. Not a fan of the reverse however, so I'd steer clear and hold out for a better example.

Agree. The reverse of this coin doesn't do the obverse justice.

I think it would straight grade, VF-25 or 30. No obvious cleaning and I don't see any corrosion. That already puts it well above average. Even with the reverse weakness it's a decent type example.

I think it would straight-grade. Any chance we could see the true color?

obverse looks stronger than VF. reverse VF30/35 some corrosion most likely on the original planchet. surface issues along with the digs on the reverse I would net it to VF30.
if I was looking to fill that hole. personally I would prefer a grade lower with a clean planchet but this is a decent example. I prefer as clean as example in the highest grade I can get for the $$ I want to spend

The coin would be a typical old copper that would make its way into a straight graded TPG with some issues that are common on the straight VF grade. There is some pitting under LIBERTY and three distracting scratches. In this series you may have to jump in grade to get a problem free coin in a straight holder. If you do find one in VF that has no pitting, no scratches, no cleaning, original surface, no corrosion, you are going to pay a premium.

It is in a PCGS slab as VF(30), straight graded. 3,500 USD seems REALLY high, though.

Really high for sure. Don't see that.

I'm betting you can find a cleaner example of a VF30 for that price. without all the problems at full retail I would say its a $3000 coin. for this one I wouldnt go higher than $2400
