I saw this 1857 Flying Eagle cent with cracks on the reverse planchet and a possible lamination by the date (?). My question is if a coin like this would be viewed as an interesting error with value, or just a coin with issues.

The photos are the sellers.

Im not certain that the obverse is laminated. Looks more like damage to me, but I could be wrong.

In my opinion, this would not command a full retail price or have any added value for the reverse planchet flaws. The flying eagle coins (1857 in particular) are known for being troublesome in regards to strike quality and planchet quality. It was a transition year for the mint from large cents to small cents and there were many issues that arose from this transition.

Fully struck 1857 FECs without planchet flaws are tough to come by.

I collect nicer FE cents but I'd pass on this one because of the reverse cracks. An error collector may feel differently.
