Hello.
The seller believed this coin to be Barfeldt catalog number 242. He listed it as "Spandau (Brandenburg) Otto VI c. 1280-1286 Denar" and
"o: Margrave between 4 shields".
Is his identification correct?

I see some similarities to a different coin: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces109750.html on the front side, but I don't think my coin's back side has a design besides an imprint left from the front design.

Thanks!

it is approx 13 mm / 0.45 grams

@spott, I agree that you might have a brockage, which is going to make pinning this down pretty difficult.

In looking at my Bahrfeldt, I agree that the obv of #242 looks similar to your coin. The margrave is standing with his forearms bent at that awkward angle (Bahrfeldt calls them "outstretched"). He is surrounded by four letter Vs, but in Bahrfeldt, each V is inside its own shield. One the rev, there is a central circle surrounded by three triangular shields, each with its own tiny eagle. Between the shields are crown-like objects. There is a mention of die variations and some uncertainty as to who actually issued the coin.

Unfortunately, I don't have the Dannenberg reference so I'm not sure that I can be more helpful. I do note that both of these references date to the late 19th Century and perhaps more has been discovered in the intervening ~150 years.

With all that said, I feel pretty comfortable saying that your German states denar dates to the late 13th or early 14th Century.

Thank you Bob L and Spence.

I looked up "brokage" (and had to explain to the helpful computer than no, I did not mean "brokerage"). That is an interesting idea and would explain the apparent lack of design on the back.

I wish I could verify where the coin came from and if is an error or simply a design that was one-sided. At least now I know that the coin the seller believed it to be had two sides too.

Thanks for your help.
