Hello - I would to find out if anyone can tell me about the odd looking 1978 cent that I have. It does look copper, but is very thin (.037" thick) and very light (1.7G). The diameter is .71", about the size of a dime. The rim is smooth, not reeded. I am attaching 3 pictures.

Can any tell me about this coin?

Thank You!

Considering the reduced size and the surface of the coin, I think acid has eaten away on this cent. Lack of a good rim and striations on the surfaces point to some sort of acid, in my opinion. Post mint damage ( PMD)

to the CCF!

I have a question about this coin merclover. Being the thickness of the coin is so thin and the diameter is smaller, if it was acid damage, wouldn't the plating be gone also?

There is no plating on a 1978 cent as it is copper.
Plating on cents did not start until 1982.
I agree with it being acid etched as the rims are usually the first to go.
