Hi everyone. I'm new to the site. I've been collecting coins for a few years. For fun. I found this 1954 Jefferson nickel a few days ago and it stood out from all the other nickels because of it's color and the fact that given its age and it being circulated. It's in pretty great shape. Now I know about pennies but not so much about other coins. Any information anyone could give me on why it's toned or if it is valuable so I know if I should handle it with more care. Its definitely going to be something I keep because its unique to me. But I would appreciate if someone with more knowledge could give me some guidence. Thank you.

I posted some pictures. Sorry if they dont really show the tone difference so much. My battery is dying so if different picture are needed I can take some in a little while. I posted the nickel in question next to another nickel. The 54' is on the right side. I appreciate all your help in advance.

You can see the wear, but good pickup.

Really can't see the toning in your pictures. Toning can happen for a variety of reasons - even if it was sitting in your cup holder in your car and got pop or coffee spilled on it.........

EDIT: Seeing your 54 is in such good condition it should at least go into a 2X2 for saving.

It is worth keeping in a 2x2 in my opinion, but I don't see much of a color difference in your comparison pic, so I can't help with that.

to CCF...you might want to use the search box for which years have "black beauty nickels". Your photo comparison isn't clear/sharp enough for me to make a judgement. But like other have said and I agree "should at least go into a 2x2 for saving" ,neat coin to get at face.

Edited: zooming in on reverse...might have a few steps there for a nice strike

A nice looking coin. 2x2 worthy if you deem it so!

Thank you guys for the info. Definitely will take a better photo tomorrow. It does have some stairs on the reverse. I'm happy to have found it. Thank you all for welcoming me to the community

Nice pick-up...put it in a 2x2 or better yet get a Jefferson album and start filling all the wholes.

Ok guys as promised today I took some more pictures. Hopefully it shows the tone difference. It definitely has a bronze toning to it.
