I would not have the heart to do this to a coin myself but once it's been done to a coin by someone else there's no going back. Some are pretty interesting and well done, and I do like them.

I take it that's newer rather than an older one?

I imagine so, I don't have any provenance of the coin.

Can you (or any reader) help explain what defines a "classic" older Hobo nickel?

I wonder if the SG counterstamp on the back is the artist's initials.

Added: looks like that is the case and this artist was active at least up until a few years back (and perhaps still is). I think her first name is "Sherry".

Deja vu Coinfrog ...... we didn't quite get an answer to this last time, wonder if we will this round .

All I could gather from the last time this topic came up, was a "genuine" or "classic" example seemed like it had to have some kind of provenance. A know artist, or known backstory. still not sure either.

I'm not an expert, but I believe the classification of an older or classic hobo nickel would apply to contemporary pieces, where the carving was done while the Buffalo nickel was in circulation. During the depression era, the 20s to 40s.
