I have just acquired my second Morgan. It is an 1888 O and a very interesting one. Initially these are what I found. Can anybody help me out the number and other Vams I have to look on the obverse. There is also a long cut in front of Liberty's throat. Must be post mint damage. However, I believe one will have to use a very hard and sharp thin object to make such a cut. Thanks
junjie

Good catch on the date doubling. However, a shot of the reverse is also necessary for attribution - I'm particularly interested in the shape of the mint mark. Most 1888-O's had round mint marks; the ones with oval mint marks are rarer and more easily attributed. No need to go over it minutely yet - we'll do this step-by-step, to help you learn the attribution process.

You've done just the right thing so far. If the coin does not have an obvious feature, visible to the eye, that lets you attribute it, then the first thing to concentrate on is the date. Look for doubling or recutting (which will look like a "hairline" double near the number but not attached). This isn't usually enough to attribute, but it sure helps to narrow things down for later.

OK. Post the reverse, and then we'll take the next step.

I'll be following along with y'all.. I tend to be pretty haphazard when I try to attribute a VAM, so this kind of step-by-step is very helpful!

x ... you hit the nail square on the head and drove it flush! You can drive yourself crazy on some dates. My personal favorites are 1878-P, 1880-P/O, 1888-O, 1891-O and 1921-D. I will venture out of this comfort zone when I see something interesting. On my favorites, I've learned to "sequence" the search. For example on the 1878-P's, the first thing to look at are the tail feathers (8 TF, 7/8 TF, 7TF). If it's a 7TF the next PUP (pick-up point) are the arrow feathers (parallel=reverse of 78, slant=reverse of 79). By starting this way I can narrow the choices down real quick. I then have sub-sets of PUPs once I narrow it to tail feathers and arrow feathers.
