I went to the bank yesterday to see if they had a James Monroe dollar coin. The last one in the pile turned out to be him, so now I have all eight Presidents! Yeah, I'm starting with the easy stuff What gets me though is that here I am, living in South Austin, where we have adverts on the television advising us that the dollar coins are real money. Apparently Austin is one of four cities in the US where they are really pushing the usage of the coins. So how come I have never seen one in the wild here? All mine come from either (a) the bank or (b) bus ticket machines in Dallas or (c) from San Francisco, where they seem to be in general circulation. Having said that, I noticed yesterday that the stamp machine in the post office says it will give them in change, so maybe there's hope yet. Anyone else in Austin? Have you found any yet?

The quintessential problem exists here with these coins. Numismatically the value of these will be nearly zero (above their $1.00 face value)....even decades from now. They mint waaaaaaayyyyy too many Billions of these. But, to address the "circulation" problem......it's the same with the Susan B. Anthony and the Sacagawea coins....nobody likes to carry them around and actually use them. We, as a public, seem to prefer the "paper" dollar instead. Now for beginners, children or otherwise, it can be a good "starter set" IMHO. It can be educational, obviously. And most banks will receive each new President when they come out. So you can get singles or a roll of them each and every time a new Presidential dollar is issued for the duration of the program. But there will never be a "high value" put upon these as a finished set, by actual collectors at any time in the future, in my opinion. The best bet would be to get all "Proof" dollars, and complete that set. Then there will be some chance at a low/fair value on this completed set.....but a "circulated" set will be nothing more than just "fun to complete" most likely. You can get these " Presidential dollar Proof Sets" each year from the U.S. Mint website and/or ebay and other sites of course. Most opinions here would actually/likely be to stay away from these Presidential dollars and focus more on Classic coins, which can be acquired cheaply and for reasonable prices, if you pursue certain denominations. Not all Classic coins will "break your budget" as is commonly thought. Research on CCF right here, will show you plenty of coins and sets to go for that are within EVERYBODY'S budget.......

I spent 3 the other day. Stores dont seem to mind taking them, but they never give them out in change (unless specifically asked), which I think is the key problem for the lack of circulation.

The problem is that no dollar coin has a chance of being successful until the paper dollar is eliminated.

The Dollar coins are so handy at the car wash (vs. quarters) that I do ask cashiers if they have any in their drawers.... Of course, the car wash bill changers don't dispense Dollar coins! Some dispense dollar tokens, but I'd rather have legal tender that you can use anywhere. I've also been dropping new Martin Van Buren's into the Salvation Army kettles. I'm kind of a traditionalist that thinks you should put a coin into a Salvation Army kettle...

But the Post office is in the middle of a three year phaseout of the stamp machines. Within a couple years all the stamp machines will either be gone or exact amount only and not returning any change..

I discovered this a few months back when I wanted to see what baby dollars I could find there.

I have got a few back in change several times but if I am collecting them I just buy the rolls from the bank or mint Quote: They mint waaaaaaayyyyy too many Billions of these Well that is correct. They minted way to many but you never know if they will melt them down or something else might happen. If no one collects them then those are the ones you want to collect.

Mark makes a good point. It is possible that the hoards of undistributed baby dollars will just be melted for scarp, making the ones that were distributed a bit rarer. I am not saying it is probable, just possible!

Thank you :-)
What are baby dollars? Do you mean the new gold ones or is there yet another sort? I know about the Sacagawea, Susan B Anthony and the bigger version of that one, also with the Eagle/Moon landing design.
I'm surprised the Post Office is phasing out stamp machines though.

I get one of the $5.95 Individual Proof Presidential Coins when they are first released. I have 6 and 8 year old sons and they help them learn more about each President and they think they are collecting coins just like their dad. As they are proofs they know how to handle coins better, take care of them and get a little American History education at the same time. Well worth the money for me.
