Hello, I am relatively new to collecting more that just the random old coin I find in change. I am having a hard time trying to see double dies. I was hoping someone could maybe educate me some on how to distinguish them. I will have a better scope this coming week. The first coin I have is a 1969 S penny. There are spots that look different, but I'm not sure if its my eyes playing tricks with shadows or if it truly is an error. It doesn't look as clear as the picture I've found online of the same year. Any help and knowledge with this and honestly anything in general you would love to share I would greatly appreciate!! Thanks so much!

Welcome, lots of online info regarding the different types of doubling on coins. Best to do a search with your preferred search engine. The link below should give you a start:

http://lincolncentsonline.com/doubledDies.html

As for what you have - Looks like DDD [ Die Deterioration Doubling] which adds no value to the coin. The other issue you will run into with Lincoln cents from the late 60's is MD [ Machine Doubling] which, again, adds no value.

The scope is great for helping to put pics online, but you will also find that a loupe is invaluable.

Good luck

to CCF. Just a FYI: it is called a doubled die,not a double die. I agree that your coin is from a worn die=DDD.
There are many forms of doubling that you need to learn, here is a good start:http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/...Doubling.htm
