This Morgan has me perplexed. I know polished Morgans, and this one has beautiful cartwheels obverse and reverse. I just don't see any signs of hanky-panky on this coin, and yet the breast, legs, talons and arrows are as flat as a pancake, while the wings including the tips are perfect with every feather bold and sharp, and the wreath encircling the eagle has every line and crease and vein in the leaves without any hint of even the slightest touch of wear. So all you much wiser than me CCF members, what's the grade and what's going on here?

Typical New Orleans strike. May have also been lightly circulated.

Not good at grading weakly struck Morgans, but the details on the coin that are there are pretty nice - MS63

Must be polish lines because they do not extend into the devices, and what lines are on the devices (on the talons) go in a different direction from the die polishing lines in the fields. Here's an enlarged and enhanced picture.

The fine lines on the field are hairlines from a wipe and the heavier lines on the Eagle are roller wheel marks from the planchet preparation.

Agree, coin has been slightly wiped on the reverse. I'll say slider AU-58 straight.

the strike on this one is pretty much average on this coin as a good percentage were fairly weak. I can only assess what I see in the photos and what the coin is telling me. it does not appear that the coin was cleaned however it may have had a dip at some point, not enough to affect it grade wise. the coin looks fairly clean chatter wise on both sides but luster looks subdued. the overall eye appeal is AVG- due to the weak strike. better examples are available. imo the coin is a high MS63 or low MS64

I always look at the field above IGWT when deciding if a Morgan dollar is mint state. This 1888-O shows darkening in this area that indicates friction from brief circulation. I'd have to say AU-58 based on these images.

If this was mine, knowing my luck, it would come back UNC Details; either cleaned or hairlines.

Quote: Must be polish lines because they do not extend into the devices, Die polish lines will extend into the devices and typically a wipe will not not extend into the devices. One the die the fields are the highest point, so when the Morgan dies were polished the fields would get polished but not the devices.
