Nice find. These are different from a coin scratch in that they are not in a straight line. Leaving an incuse mark on the coin.

i find it surprising (shocking), that a piece of thread (or cloth) can obstruct the striking of a coin...
i know that it happens - of course....
given the hardness of the metals involved and the relative softness of the thread...it just surprises me that the thread can leave its image in the coin....

Struck through thread or else someone with a dremel tool is getting pretty sneaky creating struck through errors - Quote: given the hardness of the metals involved and the relative softness of the thread...it just surprises me that the thread can leave its image in the coin.. Always wondered that too -

Full photos of both coin sides might help expand the story.

I know it is hard to tell from the pictures but to me it looks like the thread is still on the coin. The thread it actually raised up and not indented like a scratch would cause.

Well whatever it is it is a raised mark and not an indented one like a scratch would leave.

Keep in mind this coin is out of a proof set that has never left its case so someone taking, lets say a Dremel to it seems unlikely

Thanks Keith and Cecelia because I was seeing it as raised in the 5th Image. (Some of the other images do look like it's incuse, tho.) That puts it into some kind of very interesting die damage.
I say very interesting since strong die damage on proof coins doesn't happen very often. Nice find and congratulations.
