I just bought this coin on ebay because it intrigued me because of the patina.
Using PCGS Photograde, it looks like XF40, but after I got it, I searched up what patina looked like and it didn't look like patina, it looked like bronze disease; I just wanted to know what you all thought about it and what you thought about its value or if it is just an interesting coin to add to my collection.

@mr, based on the color it could be BD. Is it chalky or adherent to the coin's surface?

It looks caked on, it was there in the photo on ebay and it looks exactly the same when I got it. I don't really want to touch it, though.

By definition "Bronze Disease" is a green patina, just not a very desirable or stable one.
It is caused by exposure to chloride salts and humidity.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

By whatever name, this is basically corrosion that has ruined the value of the coin.

So it's just a cool looking coin that I bought for $2 that will eventually fall apart in the future? I can live with that.
Rest in Peace

To CCF , Yes I'm afraid so . You need to brush up on what patina looks like compared to corrosion .

A few hundred years from now it might be considered attractive.
If it is BD the coin will disintegrate, you can slow the process by storing it it a low humidity situation.
Other green patinas are more friendly, and may become relatively stable for a thousand years or more.
For two bucks I'd keep it.

Looks like verdigris with underlying corrosion.

It won't fall apart, and won't change in appearance appreciably in your life time. But it has little if any value anymore above face.
