Good evening CoinCommunity,

I've been trying for the last 2 or so hours to match this coin to one of the MANY listings for 1964 Nickel DDR's on Variety Vista and I am striking out. Not because it doesn't match any of them, but because parts of it match many of them. It most closely resembles the DDR-003 according to my untrained eyes and the "spread" does seem to get stronger from right to left like it is supposed to, but I'm unable to make a positive ID. My google-fu is exhausted, can anybody help me out here?

PS I promise I'm not just throwing up every coin I come across without any research, I'm just having a really hard time identifying this particular coin. :(

That is Machine Doubling, not a doubled die. Hub doubling shows horizontal on these devices. Not flat, shelf like on the outside edges of devices. The spread will be seen on the centers of the devices. Note this on each of the images. It will look like this:

On the second one, you are seeing flat field doubling (Which affects the fields and not the devices) beside the devices. That has nothing to do with the DDR. The DDR is on the centers of those devices:

Same on the third one as well:

Same on the fourth one. Flat Field doubling again

The last one is showing the spread in the center of the coin. Thus my point is correct. The last one is not showing the flat field doubling. (Which is first strike MD and the second strike flattening the MD from the first strike) Proof coins are struck twice.

MD.

@Yorkish - your links also are to proof coins and not circulation strikes - a completely different process is used in making them.

That is what the "PR-" part of the title on those pages means.
