Looks like a defaced 1862 copper/nickel Indian cent, worth very little in this condition. Not a candidate for grading.

Great photos for a start. This coin is what we collectors would call details for the scratched area on the front or obverse of the coin. As mentioned it's not a coin worth sending in to be graded by a 3rd party company, but it's a coin worth collecting and having until a better example can be found then upgraded if you collect by date in the Indian Head cents.

I would grade this coin VG-details, the "details" is what we call coins that have damage or problems like previously cleaned or polished, even recolored or corrosion, tooling, scratches, and other damage.

It is also not the later copper composition, they made the early Indian head out of a Copper/nickel alloy (CuproNickel) hence why they appear much lighter in color and seem to be a little thicker than Indian Head cents after 1864.

For a good place to see the various coin grades Photograde is free and has excellent photos. https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/
There you can see lower grade all the way up to incredibly expensive gem untouched coins in the finest conditions known. Plus it's free to use.

PCGS also has put out several very good grading videos on YouTube that may help you as a new comer to the hobby understand more about grading.

I've been collection and studying coins for over 35 years and have taken many week long courses on grading and authentication, I've worked for some of the third party graders directly, and been a dealer at shows, as well as working at several coin shops over the years, and I'm still learning ever time I look at a coin believe it or not.
