Been thinking about posting this coin for awhile now.
I think it is just a poor strike.
What do ya all think?

Hi,
It's a hard call from the pic, so I tried to pull out some detail...

Canada-1936-Dot-Quarter

Judging from the crown details I see a VF at least

I thought that was as well.
I would have thought that they would have been ware on the 'ear', which does not seem to have any. Also the crown on the reverse is okay. I suspect a poor strike with the 'CA' none existant, but the leaves are in really good shape.

The Canadian quarter, has been one to show a lot of wear, as I suppose it was used a lot in change.

This 1936 is really in good shape, I would also put it at VF.

I understood that if the band on the crown was not complete, meaning that the line across the bottom of the band is worn flat at some point, then the coin should not receive a grade higher than VG. I am wrong?

For the record, I am a novice trying to learn. I mean no offense to those who have graded this coin VF, but rather I am hoping to learn from your responses.

rikcando, the band of the crown is only one point of wear to consider when grading these coins.First, look at the reverse, check the vertical band of the small crown to see if beads are still visible, then check the lower leaves to see if any detail remains, look at the lettering and date for wear(the CA in Canada is almost always weakly struck on '36 dots and not a detriment to grade). Now go to the obverse and look at the band of the crown(usually but not always the best indicator of the amount of wear on the coin),check for wear on the beads of the vertical band of the crown and on HM's ear and hair(beard too),have a look at the vertical shoulder ribbon and the robe to see how much detail remains and then note the wear on the lettering. When the wear in all these areas is taken into consideration this coin is VF.

it might even make a close 30.... if ICCS would have a 25... that would be it.
And I am convinced NGC would give it 30.....
Nice 36 dot...

F 12 from me. A weak strike can not be taken into account of a coin below AU 55. Too much missing for VF. IMHO :-)

I'd say VF-20 to 25. Nice coin!
