I am pretty new to Canadian coinage and want to make sure I am paying a fair price as I look to add to my collection. What do people here recommend?

Hi, Texas Trader, I use the Charlton Standard Catalogue, of Canadian coins, but, some of the prices are a bit high.

I, also use Canadian Coin News (Trends Section) that will tell you better prices.

Canadian Coin News is a good source if you want regular updates.

For a quick reference I get the COINS and COIN PRICES issues with Canadian coins. They come out twice a year and cost $5 plus tax at my local Barnes & Noble.

Coin World WORLDWIDE COINS is another that prints Canadian values occassionally. The one I have is dated March 2008.

Try https://www.jandm.com too. They are a retailer I use for pricing info.

If you want to price Canadian coins, do so with a subscription to The Canadian Coin News. It is The BIBLE of Canadian coin pricing. The Charleton Coin Guide is published only once a year (in July) and prices vary throughout the year. For example the 1937 Dot nickel in the Charleton book is listed at $350.00. However, this coin has just "SKYROCKETED" to a whopping $700.00 this week in the Canadian Coin News as a result of high demand and perceived scarcity.
The Canadian Coin News is published bi-monthly and is an up to date current pricing guide for the greatest coins on Earth! Prices are determined by sellers from on-line auctions, coin shows and E-bay results.

Now you've been educated................have fun!

Glenn, I would really be surprised if the prices in the Canadian Coin News were updated once for every two times they were updated in Charlton. Five 1937 5 cents graded ICCS MS65 sold on ebay last year for average price of $255 Canadian. What would justify the Trend editor to bump the price to $700? The ICCS population report shows the 1937 to be one of the easier coins to find in mint state.

Hi Texas,

My number one resource for coin prices is the ebay completed listings. It'll tell you what someone was willing to pay much more recently than Charlton or Trends. I use Charlton as a baseline for estimating, and only periodically use the Trends. The Trends editor is well known for his unwillingness to list realistic prices for modern coins, so the information found there is not always indicative of the reality for prices. For example the 2006P penny isn't even listed as being more expensive than any other cent from 1986-2008 when it is amply evident that it is.

Using price guides as a starting point is a good way to prevent overpaying, but keep in mind that they are not absolute, and that some of the best coins require you to pay premiums to acquire them.

Good points skelly423. That's why I have been recording ebay results of ICCS,CCCS,NGC and PCGS certified Canadian coins sold on ebay since January of 2003. I have results of over 100,000 coins sold! Not one 1858/1558.
I sold the highest graded 1884 obverse 1 large cent(ICCS MS62) for $1999 on ebay when trends was at $600. A year and a half later I told a fellow where it was and he was able to purchase it for $2700 US and trends was still stuck at an urealistic price but it has finally caught up for high grade but is too low for circulated examples which are much rarer than the 1859 narrow 9 DP#1. I spend an hour a day 365 days a year recording ebay sales. TOOT TOOT (blowing my own horn).
