a friend has inherited a large collection of coins & currency. she sent me pix of several things to include this coin. I have no idea what it is, and she only sent a reverse pic. can anyone identify it? I'm assuming it's a commemorative of some kind. I've never seen it before.

It is a novelty piece designed for the National Collectors Mint by Daniel Carr. It is not a genuine coin.

You can read the details here: http://www.moonlightmint.com/other.htm

Do those Carr "fantasy" coins have any market appeal?

Based on the final prices of many ebay "Sold" lots, I would say there is definitely a market for Carr pieces. It does appear, however, that the market is strongest for his fantasy over-strikes on genuine US coins vs. most of his pure fantasy / concept pieces (though there are exceptions!). Each piece has a limited mintage, so he doesn't over-saturate the market - this keeps many collectors interested.

I know of one collector near me that has a near complete set of Carr's over-struck coins.

Me, I appreciate what he has been doing but haven't been a regular collector. I have one set of his fantasy over-strikes; I've posted about the three-piece set here: 1975 Daniel Carr Bicentennial Fantasies.
