The s is backwards. It hit another coin in just the right spot.

It does look a lot like a backwards letter S @1847.

It is not backwards the guy I took it too is a big time collector and said he hasn't seen anything like it was definitely not a smudge from the wrapper it's in and has been it it sense day 1 hard to be hit by another coin if not around other coins it has never had a chance to be banged around with other coins

1. It's definitely a backwards "S" any way you turn it.
2. The year of minting (2018), the mint mark (D), and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are incused on the edge of the coin not raised. the die is one piece and the letters are raised on the die so nothing can fill them.
3. regardless of the packaging you bought it in, when they are minted, they get ejected and dumped in a bin with a bunch of others at a very fast rate. it has been banged around with other coins.... at the mint. it's how the mint operates. the u.s. mint doesn't sell coins in plastic bags, they sold bags and rolls of these P+D dollar coins to customers. someone then bagged one and sold it to you.
4. Now, the chance is high this backwards S is an impression from another coin on the edge as has been said, it hit another coin at the right spot. Also slightly possible (but very unlikely) a filled die occurred with an S, fell out of the die onto a coin, and it fell outin the edge lettering step into the die and was impressed backwards into the edge. Like I said, far less likely than a coin at the bottom of the bin standing on edge with a lot of weight on top over the S in trust of another coins obverse.
5. I'd inspect the coin for trace of any other out of place letters even partial or faint, I'd try to determine which "S" I'm seeing from the 2018D innovation dollar it is. It's not from the edge lettering die, the letters are raised on that die and its a one piece die, a coin can be run through 2 or more times, or not run through at all, but an extra letter is impossible on that die EXCEPT as a hanging on dropped letter that falls off into the edge lettering die.
and if that is the case, you should be able to identify which S it is from the obverse or reverse, and even then, try to get a grading company to agree it's a strike though dropped letter and not a contact impression from another coin.
100% that's a backwards S on there. now to figure out how it could've got there in the minting process. I'd feel a lot better about it if it was reading right ways honestly, you have a harder time of a convincing argument of a dropped letter strike through with anyone that understands the minting process and how many steps and everything going perfect for the S to wind up in the edge lettering die, when it could have just been on edge at the bottom of the bin covered in thousands of pounds of coins on top of it.

Okay so I've looked at it again and I don't think it's raised but I'm going to have my friend look at it cuz he's the one that got me started and knows a lot more than me and see what he says but I can see that it's not raised

Not backwards? I think it hit another coins edge lettering S on the EPU. That would make the S backwards and raised. Will need more clear pics

The "S" is backward, upside down, or a mirrored image, whichever you prefer to call it.
