I have inherited a mounted coin. The mount was on a chain and the mount is marked silver. I removed the coin to see the edge. I have done a little research but would value the view of collectors and experts. The eagle has the snake by the tail and head and is looking to the right. The cap in the sun is worn but I can see the L and the D. It weighs between 26-27g. The diameter is a bit under 39mm. Do you think this is real?
Numisma and Condor101 commented on it being cleaned. Is that a problem when it comes to selling? I cleaned it lightly to see the detail. Do you think I should sell in the silver mount and chain or as per pics?
99% of the time cleaning damages the surfaces and reduces the value to the collector. Probably it does not matter that much in this case, since the coin, being mounted, is considered damaged. Considering that it is a common year and mint, you might well get a bit more for the lot if you sell it with the mount and chain. However, I don't believe that you will get a whole lot more than silver value for it.
I collect this sort of material for a side collection but never pay more than melt. My LCS would sell it for melt value.
For info it wasn't mounted exactly, more held in a silver band so the edge has been protected. There are no marks on the coin from the band. It has also been in a box for about 40 years. Hence being quite clean in the first place. Disappointed that oriole thinks it only worth meltdown value.

I've had mounted coins like this myself, but I never thought that they would sell for more than melt if I took them out of the mount. If you check out coin auctions, they will also state if the lot has been used as jewellery and the price will reflect that. They are just worth less. Your coin looks genuine to me (bear in mind, I'm no expert) but the fact that is has been cleaned + common year + mint makes it not very special. If I were you, I'd just give it as a gift to your significant other to wear. You could try to take it to a coin shop to have it appraised but I suspect they will say the same thing as others here have.
EDIT: Here's a video about a guy who took a 150K+ loss after he cleaned a 1850 Double Eagle.
