I have looked at this numerous times and tried to find a match online but to no avail. I would call it MD but there is what appears to be part of a device seen in the center opening. This would be a large die shift to the east if if were MD but the rest of the coin devices don't show that. Maybe RPM

That is weird--it almost looks like the mintmark was added. Have you tried a bath in acetone for this quarter?

It is machine doubled. You can see it on the devices below the mintmark area. Not a RPM.

Coop, how does Machine Doubling occur on a 52 with it being punched by hand?

(Not doubting your answer, but now that you explain this, I want to know more)

*Edited because sometimes I forget whole words and that's confusing for everyone else

Coop I saw the MD on the lower devices but they were so slight compared to the mint mark that I had to ask.

When the die strikes the coin it machine doubled everything on the coin, including the mintmark. The mintmark is on the die. It is punched into the die, not onto the coin. Sometimes the mintmark is so tall that if can be damaged in circulation or in a machine and not altered the other devices. It happens.
