So I have seen a lot of half dollars, but I have not seen one as smooth as this one or missing as many details. Is this just severely worn, PMD or something else. The coin is thinner than a typical 1976 and weighs 10.6g - the edge photo shows the question coin on the left and a typical 1976 on the right.

To me it looks like it was sanded down. Note the reverse upset rim (Proto rim) is missing. Note the angled scratches on the building? Note the date area is close to normal, where as the reverse if totally gone all round the coin. It looks like it was worked over. If it weren't polished over, why are the windows on the reverse not missing. The sanding only removed the higher devices.

Highly unlikely it left the mint in that condition. Appears to have spent considerable time in an industrial/commercial-grade dryer--perhaps a dryer at a casino where the coin may have been subjected to considerable slot machine use. Too, someone could have abraded the coin deliberately over time.

Cool example, 2x2 worthy.

Thanks all! The irregularity of devices between the obverse and reverse was interesting to me. Some looked mushy while others are gone. Would machine wear be more uniform on the reverse and not on the obverse? Not sure about sanding- I will increase magnification and see what I see. Think I will keep as an interesting example regardless.

Pocket piece--perhaps, could have been in a pocket 24/7 over the last 44 years, along with a wad of keys on a key ring and several loose quarters and such. Poor attempt at humor aside, it is an interesting piece.

That reminds me of an old piece of bottle glass you can find at the beach after years of rolling around in the surf and getting sand worn from the constant moving in the sand and surf.

I have one like this, a quarter with only the reverse worn down this heavily. I think mine was sanded as well, but it's a fun piece to show the kids.
