@moon, good question. With this amount of circulation wear, I'm thinking that it is just a couple hits which have moved the metal around.

The overall size is not increased like you would be on a RPM. So I'm just seeing contact on this one. The vending machines have worked it over real bad.

I agree with Spence and coop above, contact hits, not rpm.

to the CCF!

p.s.- In future posts, please show us the whole coin, both sides, as well as closeups of areas of interest. This helps us help you better.

Welcome moon finder.
I'm figuring you are referring to the left side of the 'P'?
I can see what I think you are seeing. Possibly resembling split serifs.
In your close up the bottom of the vertical of the 'P' does look like it has taken a hit, almost cutting the piece off.
I can also see a little bit of something resembling a 'P' inside of the curved part. But considering the fact there are no listings for an RPM for a 1988 P Quarter, along with the fact that your coin is very damaged I believe it is just coincidental hits.
I think you are looking in the right places, so don't give up.
When you find one, and you will. You will know you have found one.

I will take some pics of the entire coin after work today front and back and add to this thread it may change some opinions about the condition of this coin I took these images at around 1000x with a digital microscope I dont tend to spend much time looking at super circulated coins unless they happen to be some of the key dates or valuable ones that noone wants to miss lol in my opinion this coin is in pretty good shape but I'm also the only person here that has seen the entire coin in hand this coin shows all details of the eagles chest reverse all details of washingtons hair etc.....never the less this IS a circulated coin but as few had mentioned pics of the entire coin ob and rev would possibly go a long way thank everyone for the help
