I agree,it is a contact mark,coin took a hit and pushed the metal down forming a flat step like impression .

Probably a bit late to ask, but consider posting full, high resolution photos of the coin's obverse and reverse. This helps establish the full context of what we're looking at. Thanks.

Note the shadow. It is incuse on the coin. Note the bottom of the ear in the images. Same shadow direction as the area in question.
