Backstory: A few days past, in my post, I mentioned Ed's collection, a complete IHC album I purchased in the late '70's. Mind in absentia, guided by Ed, I put the finishing touches to it by adding the few missing keys.

@suipakpaikungfu asked me to post up the whole thing on CCF. I hadn't visited Ed's collection in a while. @suipakpaikungfu reawakened my erstwhile plan to explore the five oddities Ed placed in five unlabeled slots at bottom of the last page.

The oddities are dated 1862, 1872, 1879, 1900, and 1908. I'll post one coin at a time in hope that - having lost both beloved Ed and Ed's wisdom to the march of time - I might recover insight from experts on CCF. I posted 1862, 1872, 1879 and 1900 earlier; 1908 is appended to this post.
.
My 1908 question is: does this coin bear a mint mark? It'll take a bit of dissuasion to derail my plan to slab it at PCGS. Still, if you think I should be talked out of doing so, please, please talk!

I continue to appreciate the learning I'm collecting. Thank you!

Kevin

It looks like a divot, similar to the ones below CENT.

I would say no. Note the coin was also damaged up above that area. So someone may have been trying to alter this coin to look like a 'S'. If that area is raised, 1. They may have tried to move metal that way. 2. They may of tried to glue a mintmark on that area and it fell off. 3. They might have tried to make everyone wonder if something was going on there, when there isn't any thing there. Probably one of these answers.

Is it raised or beneath the surface?

If it's a raised lump and not a divot, the location looks too far left to represent an S mintmark.

I would agree it is too far left for the MM.

Just to add information:certainly NOT to add any conflict:

It's raised. Here's my attempt to capture the sidewall of the coin, a device and the phenomenon. @Zurie, the second image uses the same settings to capture the side wall of the divot.

Looks like the 1908 version of a parking lot coin to me.

They didn't have parking lots back then. They were where the horses waited to drag their owners back home.

fyi, you posted this in the wrong forum. This belongs in Classic section, not Modern.
