i have been viewing my coins with a small magnifying glass. it seems a lot of the varieties can only be seen with more magnification. I have found a 30x jewelry loupe for $23.97, (with free shipping on orders over $ 20.00). I dont know anything about a jewelery loupe, but this seems like a fair value. any advice would be appreciated.

I have skimped on several occasions on loupes. I regret not buying the best 30x I could find, rather than settling on the few I have now.

Bausch and Lomb Hastings Triplet is probably what I would buy next time around.
A 20x is better in the good loupes than a cheap 30x from China.

The Made in China ones I have blur out in the edges and even if they say 30x I would think that is an exaggeration on one of them by 10x at least.

The better ones give a nice even flat clear image and remove a lot of aggravation. I am tired of turning a coin this way and that and saying to myself ... "I think I see a double mintmark" or a "double die here".
If I had just bought one good one, I'd be a lot better off I think.
I suggest you buy the best you can afford and don't let it get lost.
It will pay for itself in cherry picking faster than mine will.

I bought a "double" loupe for under $10 last year. One side is 10X (I use) the other is 20X (I rarely use).

30X seems excessive to me. I think you'll wish for lower magnification often. Consider a "mutiple" style with at least two choices that allows you to view down to 10X.

Hi. 30x seems a bit strong. I've been using a 10x Bausch & Lomb hastings triplet for viewing coins. I also have a 14x for closer inspection. I would recommend buying a good quality loupe. I purchased mine from a guy on ebay. Excellent price and service. Here is a link for the 10x.

I use a 10X loupe that I bought for about $7 at a pawn shop mostly. The other thing I use is one of those plastic magnifiers with the built in LED. It's something like a 15X but the light definitely comes in handy.

I bought my 30X loupe for under five buck, brand new. Now I enjoy looking at my coins more than ever.

I use a 14x doublet for most of my examining and once in a great while I use a 20x.The 14x cost me around $7 and the 20x was $5.
The 20x also has a 10x on it and the 10x is as clear as a bell,i bought it at a flee market.I too recommend that you buy the best you can afford (a Hastings triplet)save up if you have to,you will be much more satisfied in the long run, after all you will have it for a life time.

P.S.
Forgot to mention I bought a 16x Wide angle for $9.00 that I hated,i also had a 30x that was almost useless on coins.
