Or die scratches from a polishing. All are common to find. Just die events, not a die Variety. The difference? A die Variety is hubbed onto the die and shows from coin #1 forward. Die event happens to a die during the dies life. Some die events are temporary. Others are permanent. Some die events are die ending. Depends on what happened to the die.

I'm thinking it's a (spatially limited) polishing issue. Having said that, what's going on with the right side of the coin--that arc-like feature coming down behind Roosevelt's head? Post strike damage to the rim (flattening)?
